Mission Ranch- Carmel
Clint Eastwood has accomplished a great deal in his life but for the traveler one of his best moves was to save the historic Mission Ranch in Carmel from development of another kind and let us use it- for a fee of course.
With 31 rooms and a fine restaurant you can choose between sleeping in the original 1850's farmhouse or any of a series of outlying cottages, barns and outbuildings, many with rear decks that look out over a marsh leading to the sea, with Point Lobos in the background. Grazing sheep add to the pastoral feel and reinforce the point that this is a place to relax and smell the roses. Shopping in Carmel can wait.
The grounds encourage wandering, for some to one of the six tennis courts or the fitness center. Others tend to gravitate to the piano bar or the restaurant. Still others join the sheep and just graze. Whatever your choice, there's no downside.
Not that it matters in the grand scheme of things but Clint's not an absentee owner. We've seen him in the restaurant after dinner chatting with friends just like a real person. And he's seen us. Out of mutual respect we give each other our space.
