Trinity Lake

Description: Along with Shasta Lake and a handful of others, one of Northern California's "serious" lakes with 16,400 surface acres at 2,370 feet. Part of the Whiskeytown-Shasta Trinity National Recreation Area, with 145 miles of shoreline, this is a major recreation area popular with lake-lovers ranging from house boaters to shore anglers. The lake supports all manner of amenities from public campgrounds to full-service marinas and resorts. Water levels fluctuate, so check later in the season or in periods of drought. Other attractions in the area include Shasta Lake, Whiskeytown Lake, Lewiston Lake and the Weaverville Joss State Historic Park.

Location: The main access is from Hwy. 299 west from Redding and then north on Hwy. 3 at Weaverville to the lake. Another option is to drive north on Trinity Mountain Road from Hwy. 299 at Tower House, but that by-passes much of the lake.

Nearest Town: Weaverville.

Camping: In addition to the public campgrounds listed here, there are numerous private facilities to appeal to people with any level of need. Public campgrounds include: Stoney Point Campground: 21 sites for tents only. Picnic tables, fire grills, drinking water and flush toilets. Limited facilities in winter. Reservations not accepted. Open year round, weather permitting. Stoney Creek Group Camp: tent site for up to 50 people. Reservations required. Open early may thru late September. Fawn Group Camp: 2 sites for tents or RV's to 37 feet for up to 100 people. Reservations required. Open early may thru late September. Tannery Gulch Campground: 72 normal sites and 2 double sites for RV's to 40 feet. Picnic tables, fire grills, drinking water and flush and pit toilets. Reservations accepted. Open early May thru late September. Bushy Tail & Bush Tail Group Camp: 11 sites with partial hook-ups (30 amp) for tents or RV's to 40 feet. Single, double and triple size sites. Picnic tables, fire grills, drinking water and restrooms with showers. Reservations are required. Open mid May thru early September. Ridgeville Boat-in Camp: 21 tent sites with picnic tables, fire frills and pit toilets. No drinking water. Reservations not accepted. Open year round. Clark Springs Campground: 21 sites for tents or RV's to 25 feet. Picnic tables, fire grills, drinking water and flush toilets. Limited facilities in winter. Reservations not accepted. Open early April thru October. Ridgeville Island Boat-in Camp: 3 tent sites with picnic tables, fire grills and pit toilets. No drinking water. Reservations not accepted. Open year round.  Mariners Roost Boat-in Camp: 7 tent sites with picnic tables, fire grills and pit toilets. No drinking water. Reservations not accepted. Open year round. Hayward Flat Campground: 98 sites for tents or RV's to 40 feet plus 4 double sites. Picnic tables, fire grills, drinking water and flush toilets. Reservations accepted. Open mid May thru mod September. Alpine View Campground: 53 sites for tents or RV's to 32 feet. Picnic tables, fire grills, drinking water and flush toilets. Reservations not accepted. Open mid May thru mid September. Captains Point Boat-in Camp: 3 tent sites with picnic tables, fire grills, and pit toilets. No drinking water. Reservations not accepted. Open year round.

Fishing: Large and smallmouth bass, bluegill, catfish, kokanee, brown and rainbow trout.

Boating: All manner of boats are welcome and available for rental, from fishing and pontoon boats to houseboats. There are several full-service marinas and 7 public launch ramps scattered around the lake along the western shore. Annual passes are available for regulars of day use areas and boat ramps.

Off-road Opportunities in Area: Bowerman Ridge Trail. 13.1 miles rated 4 (moderate-difficult) for difficulty (4).
