An Explorer's Guide to Northern California

Highway 1 South- San Francisco to Morro Bay

Morro Rock

Morro Rock

Once past Pacifica, Highway 1 south becomes a very beautiful drive.  Ultimately it will lead through Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, Hearst Castle and on to Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo with many waypoints along the way. The road is dotted with numerous state beaches, strategically placed produce stands and more than a few interesting campsites. There are also two can't miss commercial ventures, the restaurant at Nepenthe and Swanton's Berry Farm.

In our view there is nothing in Northern California to rival the Big Sur Coast for natural beauty in an ocean setting. The Sonoma Coast comes close. From Pacifica south this is a drive for the ages, and you can hardly drive a mile without wanting to jump out of the vehicle and gawk or take a walk on a beach. If you tire of natural beauty in a rural setting, stop in Monterey or Carmel or Pacific Grove. Wild it isn't but raise your hand if you wouldn't want to live there. In Monterey, do not even think about not spending a minimum half-day in the Monterey Bay Aquarium. And south of there, do not fail to take a hike at Pt. Lobos.
