An Explorer's Guide to Northern California

Southern Utah

Hoodoos- Bryce Canyon National Park

Hoodoos- Bryce Canyon National Park

Southern Utah is canyon country. We like it in the fall when the temperatures are moderate and for another special reason to be disclosed later. Remember the code word "fruit." Included here is the drive along scenic Hwy. 12 plus stops in Zion, Arches, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon and Canyonlands National Parks, Grand Staircase- Escalante National Monument and several local stops that are well worth a visit. Most travelers will want to spend a minimum of three days in each national park plus a total of at least three more days traveling slowly from point to point. There's plenty to see between the "major" destinations. We always take a copy of Edward Abbey's classic memoir Desert Solitaire to read once again to inspire us. For the uninitiated, its a fine book by a fine writer who spent several years as a seasonal ranger for the National Park Service in southern Utah, primarily Arches National Park. Part polemic and part love letter, nobody has done a better job of evoking a love for the desert than the late Mr. Abbey.
